Cops Prosecute Culprits in $300,000 GPO Drugs Probe

Police have preferred charges against Eldon Simon Renee for the Importation of Controlled Drugs under the Drug (Prevention of Misuse) Act of Saint Lucia and Possession of Controlled Drugs with Intent to Supply, Fraudulent Evasion and Illegally Imported Goods under the customs act.

On August 11, Renee appeared before the First District Court, where he was granted bail in the sum of $40,000 cash or suitable surety. Bail conditions included the surrender of all travel documents, a prohibition on leaving the state without prior court permission, and mandatory sign-in conditions at a designated police station.

Police investigators had indicated plans to lay charges against the individuals involved in a blatant drug shipment deal valued at over EC$300,000, detected at the island’s major postal service last month.

On July 29, officers from the Gangs, Narcotics, and Firearms Unit, in collaboration with the Customs and Excise Department, intercepted a suspicious incoming shipment at the General Post Office in Castries.

The police report that drugs concealed in a package originating from the United States were seized, documented, and secured as evidence. The total weight was 8.02 kilograms, with an estimated street value of EC$320,800.

The shipment, declared as food items, was found to contain eighty rectangular bricks of suspected cannabis resin (hashish), each stamped “Made in California.”

On August 6, a General Post Office employee was arrested. Acting on leads, investigators executed a search warrant on August 8 in Millet, resulting in the seizure of electronics. The suspect was taken into custody for questioning.

Investigations are ongoing, and charges for Importation of Controlled Drugs under the Drug (Prevention of Misuse) Act of Saint Lucia, Fraudulent Evasion under Section 84 (2) Schedule 3 – Part 2 Paragraph 5, and Goods Improperly Imported under the Customs Act section 32 (1) (b), (d) & (f) will be filed.

A police spokesperson stated that this case underscores the success of coordinated inter-agency operations in Saint Lucia, showcasing the effectiveness of timely intelligence-sharing and swift execution of search and arrest warrants in disrupting drug trafficking networks.

With the seizure of over EC$300,000 worth of drugs and the charging of suspects, police sources confirm this operation delivers a significant blow to the illegal drug trade.

Meanwhile, in more news from the police; On Tuesday August 12, 2025 about 3:15 a.m. Police Officers attached to the Criminal Investigations Department responded to a report of a shooting at Wilton’s Yard, Castries.

Initial inquiries revealed that two individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. One (1) of the individuals was later pronounced dead on the scene by a medical practitioner.
The deceased has been identified as thirty-seven (37) year-old Olando Kelvin William of Wilton’s Yard, Castries.
