Completion of J.C. Dam Rehabilitation & Dennery North Water Supply Celebrated

As WASCO continues its efforts to strengthen Saint Lucia’s water infrastructure, regional support for development projects remains instrumental in enhancing the resilience of critical water systems. The recent completion of the John Compton Dam Rehabilitation Project and the Dennery North Water Supply Project’s successful closure has significantly improved water availability for several communities.

During a recent visit by delegations from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), WASCO officials highlighted the progress made under the John Compton Dam Rehabilitation Project, which was necessary due to the damage caused by extreme weather events. Head of WASCO’s Project Management Unit, Maurice Norville, explains what WASCO has accomplished through the project and the improvements made to ensure long-term water security.

The US$13.5 million project, co-financed by the CDB and IDB, addressed significant sediment accumulation in the reservoir, restoring its capacity and ensuring a more reliable water supply for thousands of Saint Lucians supplied by the Northern distribution network. Norville outlined the management strategies for the sediment disposal area (SDA) and the steps taken to manage it effectively at the John Compton Dam.

Building on these efforts, the Dennery North Water Supply Project has significantly improved access to potable water for residents and businesses in the area. WASCO’s Senior Production, Treatment, and Quality Officer, Louis Ernest, highlights the improved water quality in the area since the commissioning of the Thomazo Treatment Plant.

Ernest’s perspective is echoed by community members who have experienced firsthand the vast improvements to water quality and availability since the commissioning of the Thomazo Treatment Plant.

The improved water availability in Dennery North, now provides a reliable supply to Morne Panache, Richfond, Grande Ravine, La Ressource, Gadette, Derniere Riviere, and Aux Leon, among communities throughout the valley. This successful implementation underscores WASCO’s commitment to strengthening water infrastructure and ensuring sustainable access to clean water for all Saint Lucians.
