A publication entitled ‘Tourism’ will officially be released today, January 29, 2025, at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort.

The published work, written by Dr. Judy Deterville-Jacob focuses on how the tourism sector has developed as a key pillar for economic and social advancement in Saint Lucia. Further, it seeks to understand how the tourism industry has assisted in the realization of specific sustainable development goals that speak to the economic and social development of the country. The book ‘Tourism’ is the result of a study and is a review of two decades from 2003 to 2023.

The Government of Saint Lucia has positioned Tourism as the lead sector for economic development. In developing the tourism agenda, there are specific factors, identified as poverty and employment, which must be discussed in relation to and alongside increases in tourism growth.

This publication, the result of intense research work theorizes that tourism plays a critical role in reducing poverty and creating opportunities for increased employment. Further, tourism will assist in achieving the economic and social sustainable development goals which are specific to this endeavour. This raises concern due to the singular reliance on tourism as the main economic pillar for development in Saint Lucia, coming after the collapse of the once-thriving banana industry which had been the primary source of foreign exchange for decades.

A qualitative approach is used to gather and analyse primary and secondary data and to suggest a set of policy implications and recommendations. The research includes extractions from interviews with subject experts and non-experts from the general public. Data was collected, extracted and analysed while acting under internationally recognised and accepted standards for ethics in research, fully acknowledging, respecting and protecting the rights of all respondents.
