Verne Garde has been appointed as the Acting Commissioner of Police of the Royal St Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) on a six-month contract.
Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced the appointment on Monday, highlighting that it is an opportune time to utilize Mr Garde’s experience in law enforcement.
His performance will be evaluated over the initial six months to determine the future direction of the RSLPF.
Since October 2022, Vern Garde served as the Director of the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) as his second tenure, having previously held the position from February 2015 to June 2018. Before his first stint as Director of BCF, he headed the Special Branch Unit of the RSLPF.
Prime Minister Pierre emphasized on his vast experience in managing people and resources within law enforcement. The newly appointed Acting Commissioner of Police has also headed several out-district police stations, including those in Anse La Raye, Canaries, Marigot, and Marchand.
Vern Garde is highly regarded in the field of law enforcement and has received awards from the Central Intelligence Unit of the United States, as well as memoranda of appreciation from the United Kingdom Customs and Excise Unit and the United States Embassy in Bridgetown. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement and Administration and has completed various professional courses in law enforcement.
National Security Minister said that, given the pressing issue of crime, Mr Garde’s previous contributions to the Central Intelligence Unit of the Saint Lucia Police Force, a crucial unit in crime fighting, will likely lead to greater successes under his leadership.
Prime Minister Pierre emphasised that his experience and training bode well for the future of the police force. He also mentioned an ongoing strategy to train officers within the police hierarchy.
MrGarde, participated in numerous professional courses covering drug enforcement, narcotics intelligence, protective security, gang investigation, leadership and management, as well as train-the-trainer programmes.
The Prime Minister said that Garde’s appointment has received support from the RSLPF officers. He stressed on the importance of having a competent leader to effectively address the issue of crime.
PM Pierre also acknowledged the contributions of Crusita Descartes-Pelius, whose tenure as Commissioner of Police ended on August 31, thanking her on behalf of the Government and People of Saint Lucia.
The Prime Minister said that an interim appointment for the Director of the Bordelais Correctional Facility will be made shortly.
