Roshadie Dupre, a former student of the Bishop Charles Gachet RC Primary School, is the proud recipient of the inaugural Atwell Dalgliesh Scholarship. Dupre, who attained a score of 78.6% in the 2024 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) will be taking up his secondary studies at Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School.
Not only a solid student, but also an avid sportsman, young Roshadie was formally apprised of his good fortune on Monday 22 July 2024, by Mrs. Karen Hippolyte-Elizee, Managing Director of Atwell Dalgliesh (St. Lucia) Ltd. The company, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary of operation in Saint Lucia, will be funding uniforms, books, and fees for the pre-teen from Bagagtelle for the next five years.
“We are celebrating our 50 years of business, and we felt that we needed to do something to give back to the community, give back to Saint Lucia,” said Mrs. Elizee. “Identifying a student, getting to meet that family, what we want to do is to make that child, and their parents, feel that they can continue their education without any worldly burden. All they have to be concerned about is studying, going to school. So I think it helps in the mindset of the child, the parent, it frees them up a bit knowing that they don’t have to worry about the financial burden.”
The scholarship fund, which will see one student being awarded annually going forward, is dedicated to the legacy of the company’s founders. In 1974, Philip Hippolyte and Arnott Valmont helped Atwell Dalgliesh open its doors in Saint Lucia, on the corner of Peynier Street and High Street in Castries. The company is now one of the island’s leading suppliers of food service, hardware, plumbing, janitorial, and safety supplies.
“It really does feel good to give back, especially to a young person,” said Mrs. Elizee. “Saint Lucia has been good to us as a company. We have forged many amazing relationships with our suppliers and our customers over the last five decades. Hopefully, our relationship with the recipients of the Atwell Dalgliesh Scholarship will last at least that long. We wish the young man every success in his academic career, and we will be there to cheer him on every step of the way.”
