The Caribbean Youth Challenge Series is in full swing, with the Semifinals and Finals set to take place this weekend at the Corinth playing field.
Organizers are urging sports enthusiasts to come out and support the talented young players. The tournament, hosted by the Gros Islet Football League (GIFL), runs from July 19 to 28 and features several clubs, including two visiting teams from the Republic of Dominica.
The series includes exciting football matches across different age categories: Under 12, Under 15, and Under 17. Players showcase their skills and compete fiercely on the Corinth field.
Beyond the field, the initiative focuses on holistic development. Youngsters aged 9 to 18 participate in workshops that cover topics like overcoming adversity, conflict resolution, and anti-gang awareness. These sessions take place at alternate venues.
Themed “Kick Out Crime and Violence,” the series aims to provide a constructive outlet for youth. It fosters personal growth, discipline, and a positive outlook on life.
Darren Donaie, a senior national player from GIFL, emphasized the competitiveness of the matches. There are no clear favorites, and teams communicate well. Sponsors and parents actively support the event.
In a recent Under-17 match, Pointe Michel FC (Dominica) made a comeback, securing a crucial three-point win against Lancers. The game was intense, with Malachi Bonney’s well-struck free-kick leveling the score before Micah Etienne put Pt Michel ahead.
After Day 5, here’s how the teams stand:
Under 12:
Group A: GMC (2 matches, 4 points), Obla (3 matches, 4 points)
Group B: Nyah FC (3 matches, 7 points), Black Panthers (2 matches, 4 points)
