Will there be a new calypso monarch tonight or will Ti Blacks hold on to his crown?
That’s the big question which will be on the minds of many calypso lovers when they gather at the SAB Playing Field tonight, to witness what promises to be an exciting night of original calypso music.
Ti Blacks, who delivered two compelling songs ‘Don’t Forget Minelle’ and ‘The Ghetto Cries’, last year to win the monarch title will tonight face six former calypso kings in the persons of Dezral, Educator, Menell, Solange, TC Brown and Ti Carro. The other competitors are Gamtion, Herb Black and Mica.
It is a wide-open field as each contender has what it takes to triumph on the big stage tonight. And with each having a following, a large turnout is expected at the SAB, a venue which has turned out to be perhaps the ideal venue for such an event.
For the judges it will not be an easy task as they will have to pass judgement on the best of the best calypsonians for 2024. As for the calypsonians, they will be facing the music as equals therefore they have no choice but to present their best not only to the judges, but to a Saint Lucian audience who always pride themselves as better able to judge a calypso final than the judges selected for the job.
