The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, is issuing this statement to inform the general public of the trends observed globally in respiratory illnesses with particular interest in COVID -19.
Globally, the number of new cases of COVID-19 have remained at a stable level during the past 28-day period of 27 May to 23 June 2024 as compared to the previous 28-day period of 29 April to 26 May 2024, with over one hundred and thirty-five thousand new cases reported.
During the same period an overall increase in new hospitalizations and new ICU admissions has also been recorded. This is according to the July 15, 2024 COVID-19 epidemiological report by the World Health Organization.
Regionally countries have reported increases in confirmed cases of COVID19. Locally, the risk of contracting respiratory illnesses including COVID-19 still exists. As a result, we must take every available measure to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses in our population. Whilst the symptoms of COVID-19 have evolved, we remind the public that many symptoms have remained the same and persons may experience fever, runny nose, sore throat and cough. These symptoms can be confused with the flu or other respiratory viruses.
Persons experiencing respiratory symptoms are encouraged to adhere to the following measures to prevent the spread of any respiratory illness:
• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.
• Wear a mask in crowded or enclosed spaces, especially if you are feeling unwell or are around others who are sick.
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
• If you are feeling unwell, please stay home until you feel better so as to prevent spreading the germ causing the illness to others.
• If your symptoms linger or you experience severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or persistent fever, seek medical attention immediately.
Persons should continue to practice good health seeking habits such as getting adequate rest, exercising, eating a healthy diet and staying hydrated.
