IN a deeply concerning turn of events, Venezuela’s threats of invasion of the Guyana Essequibo region has raised alarms about security in the Caribbean, a well-established zone of peace and political stability. The blatant violation of Guyana’s territorial integrity is a direct affront to the principles of international law and poses a serious threat to stability in the region. The United Workers Party is concerned about the security risk that an escalation of the situation will pose for the region and Saint Lucia.
We call upon the government of Saint Lucia to state its position on the situation and to provide clarity and comfort to the people of Saint Lucia and the many persons from Guyana who reside or are now citizens of Saint Lucia.
