“There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise.” W.E.B. Dubois
St Lucia made an outstanding gesture when the House of Parliament enacted the Domestic Violence Bill on International Women’s Day which was observed on the 8th of March, 2022. The holistic approach taken by the government to protect all members of society is commendable. We need to remember violence is committed on all ages and genders, and is not only restricted to physical attacks.
The people of St. Lucia are hopeful that the Government will move swiftly to do all that is in its powers to tackle the problem of violent crimes in our society. All influencers in society should get on board to show the less fortunate among us a better way of life. We must elevate the thinking of our people. The pastors and evangelists must get busy sharing the good news with those who are without hope because they do not see a better way than what they are accustomed to. Politicians have to lead their followers to a better life whether it is by religion, arts, culture or simply uniting communities with a sense of purpose. Our people must be shown a better way.
Regarding the laws that were enacted in the lower house and is certain to be passed in the upper house within days will be worth nothing unless the government and civil society put boots on the ground and strengthen social services. There must be a programme for re-educating our people to live decent, loving, and caring lives. We must bring an end to the thinking that it doesn’t affect me. We must remove this false premise because the people we turn our eyes away from today whether they are criminals, lunatics or generally deemed undesirables will affect all of us in due course. Ten years ago, the crime rate was not as it is today. There must be a better way but it will depend on the deliberate action of the influencers in society, especially the politicians. I cannot over emphasise the fact that the government has to lead and forge partnerships. Maybe, a look at generous tax incentives that will encourage companies to live up to their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) may be a good starting point.
It is time to explore collaborative opportunities to effect the changes that are necessary in our society. What about implementing Public, Private Partnerships (PPP) to promote social programmes in our communities? We can start with EMPOWERMENT COMMUNITY PROJECTS, with a theme such as “CHANGE YOUR MINDSET, AND ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS.” It should be all about Motivation.
Let powerful words of hope be heard across the length and breadth of this beautiful island state. Is VOLUNTEERISM dead? Are there persons in our society who are rendered voiceless by others in authority? It is time that we call upon all those who have benefitted from being St. Lucian and have developed themselves and made contributions in their businesses and professions to give back by contributing to programmes that will empower the less fortunate. There are many opportunities to give back.
I am aware that many persons are willing to give back to society but there are not many avenues to do so. In many cases, it is the long standing Associations and Clubs that in some instances have become too expensive for individuals. Let us create new avenues for persons to share their experiences and tell stories that will give others hope.
Everyday we’re awake, should bring new opportunities. The government is not financially capable to do everything that needs to be done. It is against that background that I suggest that creative ways must be found to help our citizens to find opportunities to empower themselves. On Friday 4th March 2022, I launched a programme titled LIFESTYLE BALANCE on YouTube, and already the programme is booked out for April with contributors who are willing to talk about their experiences.
Let us celebrate the coming into being of our Domestic Violence Bill and get behind our Government to bring all measures to bear in its execution. It is a long road but it should be the desire of each of us to ensure that through this enactment a better way will be found.
Stay Healthy, Stay Safe! Blessings!
