P.M. Pierre Surprises Many at Caribbean Ties Exhibition

PRIME Minister Philip J. Pierre surprised the organisers of the Caribbean Ties exhibition when he stopped by for a visit on Friday August 13, at the Anglican School Annex.

During the lunch time visit, Pierre met with Archdeacon Christian Glasgow of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Dr. Winston Phulgence, President of the Archaeological and Historical Society members of the organizing committee namely Cecil Charles and the General Secretary of the Archaeological and Historical Society, Emmanuel Alexander and the joint HTC/ASHS Chairman David Jordan all of whom were present during his visit. Pierre was also given a short tour of the exhibition by representatives of the St. Lucia Volunteers.

The organizing committee is comprised of members representing various institutions including the Ministry of Tourism, St. Lucia National Trust, National Reparation Committee, Folk Research Centre, Iyanola Council for the Advancement of Rastafari and the Niabinghi Order, Indian Heritage, UWI Open Campus, Cultural Development Foundation and the St. Lucia National Archives.

Caribbean Ties is seen as a signature event and is also the only event commemorating Emancipation Day which was successfully launched on August 1, this year.

The exhibition is spearheaded by the Nexus 1492 project for which the Leiden University in the Netherlands has shared some of the findings and elements of the research conducted over the full expanse of the Caribbean and Latin American region. Caribbean Ties exhibition is being coordinated with leading collaborators Holy Trinity Church and the St Lucia Archaeological and Historical Society. Organizers received sponsorship from Carasco and Sons, Ist National Bank, Peter and Company and the Government of Saint Lucia.

The exhibition is open to the general public from 8: 00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily and ends on August 31. A number of summer school camps have attended the exhibition since its opening.
