H.E. Dr Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, conducted a video conference with Hon. Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre on 2 August 2021. Hon. Dr Ernest Hilaire, First Deputy Leader of Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP), and Hon. Alva Baptiste, SLP Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, also attended the video conference.
Foreign Minister Wu extended again his warmest congratulations on the SLP victory in the recent general election. He also stressed the significance of Saint Lucia as one of Taiwan’s most important diplomatic allies in the Caribbean, and that Taiwan will continue to enhance the cordial friendship and cooperation between the two countries, as well as work with the new administration to promote projects beneficial to Saint Lucians.
Minister Wu appreciated the continued support of Saint Lucia for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the international organisations throughout the years. He asked Hon. Prime Minister Pierre to continue to support Taiwan’s international participation and invited Hon. Prime Minister Pierre to visit Taiwan soon. He also expressed his wish to visit Fair Helen again in the near future.
Hon. Prime Minister Pierre showed his appreciation to President Tsai Ing-wen and the Government of Taiwan for supporting Saint Lucia’s national development, and for Taiwan’s assistance to Saint Lucia’s fight against COVID-19. He reiterated his administration’s determination to strengthen the Taiwan-Saint Lucian diplomatic relationship and cooperation.
Minister Wu said he is “impressed by the PM’s vision” for Saint Lucia, and excited to “partner in its realisation.” He tweeted that the two countries share a great friendship founded on the values of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law. Hon. Prime Minister Pierre said that the conversation is “fruitful” and that he looks forward to continuous engagement.
Dear Sir, there is no need to panic, our Government is named ‘Labour’ and should not be interpreted as being ‘Socialist’ so therefore, we are not like some far left leaning Societies in the world. We are much more disciplined, though poor, but will stand up to our principles irrespective of a change in our local affairs in Government. Shall we continue as sister nations in the world in which we share and continue with the friendship we have known as before. Thank you Sir; I am just a humble Son of St. Lucia. Be Blessed.
