An initiative of Edward Harris, popular businessman, network enthusiast and author of “Winning Strategies” and the “Knowledge Sharing Institute”, together with associate Tedburt Theobalds, Saturday, December 30, will see the coming together of several southern-based writers, including award-winning writer/poet Modeste Downes, in a book signing and poetry reading gala to bid farewell to 2017.
The 4-hour session, scheduled for 9 a.m. – 1.00 p.m., will be staged at Glo-Mart Bookstore and Stationery, Gablewoods South, along the Vieux Fort/Laborie Highway. Apart from promoting Glo-Mart as the go-to centre for local literature, it aims to advocate reading as a pacifier in the midst of the hustle and bustle and consumerism that typifies the period between Christmas and New Year celebrations. Beginning with this initiative, Glo-Mart aims to fill the void occasioned by the closure or downsizing of numerous bookstores across the island that once served as outlets for the works of local writers.
The event will feature the works of Edward Harris and Modeste Downes, as well as prominent authors Anderson Reynolds and Jolien Harmsen, both of whom have made significant contributions to a better understanding and appreciation of Saint Lucia’s history by their several publications.
All the featured writers will have their books on display and available for sale.
The organizers wish to underscore the point that books make very interesting and lasting gifts, and urge fellow Saint Lucians to join them in saying farewell to an eventful year and to purchase a book for themselves or as a gift for a friend.
The activity is free and open to the general public. Refreshments will be served.
