ANOTHER Round of 8 is just three weeks away and for the first time since the inception of the Veterans In Sports Inc. Football Tournament, the city centre has no team left in the main draw when it resumes on Saturday January 6, 2018.
The final eight going into the quarterfinal of the main draw are: Group A — Vieux Fort South, Valley Ledgens; Group B — Anse la Raye Veterans, Central Vieux Fort; Group C — Soufriere Veterans, All Black: Dennery; Group D – Gros Islet Veterans and Micoud Veterans.
The teams heading into the quarterfinal stage have every right to be there and Flow Lancers FC, LabowiConnextions, Vieux Fort North and Caricom Masters would have themselves to blame for not advancing to the main draw.
Defending champions VSADC failed to come to terms after their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Vieux Fort South in their opening match up at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds. Prophets and Kings, who had so much going for them last year, this time around never lived up to expectations. Behind the College All Stars had a tough uphill battle competing in Group B.
In the final round of matches in the prelimanry stage of the tournament played at the Gros Islet playing field, Flow Lancers FC and Micoud played to a 1-1 draw. Jonathan John scored for Flow Lancers FC in the 6th minute, while Conrad Evand got the equalizer for Micoud Veterans in the 57th minute.
Gros Islet Veterans had a 3-0 win over Mon Repos Sharks. For Gros Islet Veterans, Shermon Sylvester scored in the 38th minute, while Roger Celestine had goals in the 51st and 61st minutes.
In a must-win situation between Central Vieux Fort and Behind the College All Stars, CVF edged out BTC 4-2 with goals from Titus Elva in the 5th and 49th minutes and Wilbur Moffat in the 20th and 37th minutes.
For BTC, Jerry Reneau scored in the 30th minute and Junior Samuel in the 79th.
The encounter between VSADC and Congorians was not played as Congorians failed to show up for their 6:00 p.m. match-up.
