THE EDITOR:
I would like to place on record the passing of Makandal Daaga of Trinidad and Tobago, formerly president of the Students’ Guild at UWI, St. Augustine.
I was co-opted on the Guild during his presidency and perhaps for this reason and the Walter Rodney protests in Port of Spain I was banned from visiting certain islands in the Caribbean, as did Granger. Later, he led the Black Power movement in T and T and was arrested and imprisoned several times. He had set the entire south and east Caribbean conservatives afflict by his rhetoric.
He was seen by some as a disciple of Marcus Garvey of Jamaica. May he be long remembered. I extend condolences to his family and to his many friends and admirers. May he rest in peace
