GROS Islet emerged as champions of the St.Lucia Football Association’s Inter District Under – 18 competition when they defeated home team Soufriere 3 – 2 on Sunday.
In front of a small, but appreciative crowd at the Soufriere Mini Stadium the visitors nosed ahead in the first minute of play when Aaron Richard’s right foot shot past the Soufriere custodian from a corner to start a mini celebration on the square.
Gros Islet will increase on their lead again from another corner kick with Richard doubling his goal tally on the day in the 13th minute. But Soufriere regrouped and in the process cut the deficit when Zacherinus Simon eluded the Gros Islet custodian to make it 2 – 1.
Richard made it 3 – 1 in the 36th minute as he claimed his first hat trick of his career to give his team the advantage going into half time.
Lurick Simon’s 68th minute strike for Soufriere gave his team a glimpse of hope of equalizing the score line, but that’s how it remained up until the final whistle.
In the third place play off Canaries defeated Dennery, 2 – 1. The half time score 1 – 1.
In awards presented immediately following the two encounters Aaron Richard of Gros Islet received the award for most goals and the MVP of the Tournament. Best Defender was Sebastian Ribot of Gros islet, Best attacker was Nictus Lawrence of Gros islet, Best Midfield player was Zacherinus Simon of Soufriere, while the Fair Play award went to Soufriere.
