AS part of its continued drive to promote Beach Volleyball among youth and in preparation for the 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games, the St. Lucia Association hosted an FIVB Beach Volleyball Grassroots Coaches Course recently.

A total of 20 persons registered for the course with 16 being successful. The course primarily targeted teachers and coaches in secondary schools island-wide.

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) appointed AvelinoAzevedo of Portugal to facilitate the five day course.

Avelino has conducted numerous clinics for referees and coaches in different parts of the world. In addition, he has been an international referee since 1978 and was player and coach for Clube do Porto from September 1972 to July 1989. He holds a Master’s in Sports Psychology and is a Physical Education teacher at the University of Porto, Portugal.

Increasing the number of beach volleyball coaches in secondary schools is part of the St. Lucia Volleyball Association’s strategy to develop this format of the sport and unveil the first ever Inter Secondary School and Junior Beach Volleyball Tournament and ultimately ensure teams are well prepared for the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in our own backyard.
