Sandals Foundation to the rescue
Anthony De Beauville

The Sandals Foundation is known for its generous donations of various types of equipment to educational institutions throughout the country, and the latest handover was no exception recently. This time around it was the turn of the Anse La Raye Primary School where Sandals Regional Public Relations Officer Dominic Fedee along with renowned cricket commentator, Joseph ‘reds’ Perreira made a presentation of sporting equipment to the school.

Following the handover of the gears Sandals representative said, “Cricket, is one of the most popular sports around the world, and this donation from the Sandals Foundation is one that the school will put to immediate use”.

He went on to say, “For you to have a donation to come like this it did not happen just like that; companies didn’t get involved as much as they are now, there weren’t that many incentives in cricket like now, there was no IPL, the players who played for the West Indies in the earlier year did not make any money to talk about; you have an opportunity, there is so much financial incentive in the game now; as long as you get into the professional level the sky is the limit. There is television involved; you can be a cricket commentator after the game like Joseph ‘reds’ Perreira, so take this seriously, it’s a wonderful game.

In all the sports, cricket teachers used to be sportsmen, more than any other sport, regardless of how sports have modernized, we see cricket remains a gentleman’s game, it is still a game where you are supposed to have the highest amount of respect, for your fellows, it is still a game where people expect you to have integrity, if you’re out that you should walk , this is still some of the guiding principles. You have chosen a very good path, a very good sport and it’s a worldwide sport with lots of opportunities.

Renowned cricket commentator, Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira took time out when he went on to share some vital tips to the young and aspiring cricketers, He said, “The thing about equipment, they are nice to have, they are very useful, they help you a great deal to play at a higher level; more people get a chance to practise at the same time. What is important is that you take care of it at all times.

Reds encouraged the young men to continue to take their school work seriously, remain in school, do not quit, work hard, if there is a problem turn to your teacher, don’t just think cricket, cricket, cricket, don’t be selfish, if you’re a good cricketer don’t believe that you will get marks playing cricket, you will get marks on your ability as to how you have done your homework and exams.

In the coming years you will impress the Sandals Foundation so much that this school really needs to looked at after; stay in school, do not drop out, be good cricketers, but think beyond cricket, because there is life after cricket, some of you may go on to play for St.Lucia, Windwards and the West Indies, but for those who might not go on to get a professional contract make sure you have the qualification to be able to get a good job, a good life so you can eventually own your home/business.

Meanwhile, cricket coach for the Anse La Raye Primary Albert Corsini and John Smith a member of the Anse La Raye cricket committee were on hand and shared similar sentiments when they thanked the Sandals Foundation for their generosity. The two gentlemen assured the Sandals representative Dominic Fedee and Perreira that the gears will be put into good use and most importantly will be taken care of.
