OPEN WATER SWIMMING

The Sandals Grande Jetty at the Pigeon Island National Landmark was a hive of swimming activity when over 25 national swimmers participated in the inaugural Peterkin Sports and Fitness Academy (PSFA) Open Water Swimming Race.

Under what can best be described as a near perfect day for swimming, the sea condition on the morning was just right for the competitors and the many officials on the various Kayaks ensuring safety of the swimmers.

The event that was sanctioned by the St.Lucia Amateur Swimming Association was divided into three categories which saw swimmers participate in the 1.5Kilometre, 3Kilometre and the 5Kilometre respectively. While swimmers between the ages of 13 - 17 years contested for a potential spot on the first ever St. Lucia CARIFTA Open Water Team, to be hosted by Jamaica on Wednesday 3rd April 2013 at The CARIFTA Championships.

In the female segment of the 5km, first across the finish line was national swimmer Bailey Spiegelberg in a time of 1 hour 23.20 seconds,. In the 13 -15 boys Tarik Lord made light work of his opponents to finish in a time of 1 hour 31.40 seconds. JohnathanMcLennon captured the top spot in the boys 15 – 17 with a time of 1 hour 23 .84 seconds, while Jean Francois Gregoire finished strong to win the 18 and over in a time of 1 hour 43.54 seconds.

The 3 kilometre saw Sophia Spiegelberg in the 13 - 14 girls winning in a time of 57 minutes 18 seconds. She also came ahead of the same sex in the 18 and over category; first across the line in that category was Catherin Kay 57 minutes 31 seconds, Clare Tenger captured the second spot in 1 hour 07.41 seconds and Monique Devaux Lovell was third in a time of 1 hour 18 minutes 21 seconds.

Jyasi Daniel continued his good run on form so far this year to win ahead of Mark Emmanus (48 minutes 07 seconds) in a time 47 minutes 35 seconds in the boys 13 - 14 3 kilometre, Stefon Emmanuel 52 minutes 25 seconds was enough to see him making his first open water podium call in a time of 52 minutes 25 seconds, while, Felix Meixner captured the gold for the same distance in a time of 52 minutes 26 seconds.

 
 

The girls 9 -12 1.5 kilometre saw three national swimmers, Eden Crick, Katelin Samuel and Abby Pultie finishing in that order to win the gold, silver and bronze in a time of 26 minutes 20 seconds, 26 minutes 35 seconds and 28 minutes 37 seconds respectively.

In the 1.5 kilometre 13 -14 girls first across the finish line was Kyra Joseph in a time of 31 minutes 15 seconds, Sherese Louis took charge of the girls 15 – 17 category to win in a time of 32 minutes 15 seconds, while Lily Bergasse was too strong for Vanessa Eugene and Cathlina Lawrence, Bergasse winning time was 36 minutes 25 seconds.

The boys 9 - 12, 1.5 kilometre saw GauravBahalla was first across the line in a time of 26 minutes 31 seconds, while Jamarr Archibald and Ethan Prospere pocketed the silver and bronze medal in a time of 29 minutes 14 seconds and 35 minutes 35 seconds respectively.

In the 1.5 kilometre 13 - 14 boys Omar Alexander was first across the line in a time of 35 minutes 50 seconds, boys 15 - 17 saw Christian Andrew winning the gold in a time of 26 minutes 18 seconds, while in the 18 and Over category Daniele Buccheri 28 minutes 36 seconds was enough to capture the top spot.

Meanwhile, the organizers took PSFA took the opportunity to thank Sandals Grande, Ferrands Food Products Limited and Crystal Clear Water for their assistance.
