Double Celebration For Sharks Swim Club

The Sharks Swim Club has a lot to cheer about as one of the leading swim clubs on the island. Their performance over the last three years in and outside the swimming pool can best be described as exemplary.

The club is presently in the process of recruiting some of the island’s young and aspiring swimmers and likewise in the coming days will commence a hectic fund raising drive for its members as sponsorship on the home front continues to dwindle.

Over the past 3 years Sharks Swimmers have been at the forefront of St. Lucia’s swimming locally, regionally and internationally. However, there has been much to celebrate in the pool, outside the pool and in the class room respectively. Sharks Swimmers have shown that they have what it takes to combine swimming and academic and still be a force to be reckoned with.

One of St.Lucia’s 2000 Sydney Olympian swimmer Jamie Peterkin is presently the Head Coach for the Sharks Swim Club. Jamie took a time out to speak to this reporter earlier this week when he said, “To date, our swimmers have qualified for meets such as the Commonwealth Youth Games, the Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympic Games, Junior World Championships, World Championships and the Carifta Games just to name a few”

He further went on to say, “We have enjoyed a record breaking and medal performances at the regional level Championship meets and being awarded for our outstanding performances in the classroom as well”.

The likes of Siona Huxley, Runako Daniel and Jordan Augier have captured the junior sportswoman and junior sportsman for the year. Presently, Jordan Augier is the reigning junior sportsman for 2011.

 
 

The 2010 male swimmer for the year Runako Daniel and 2010 Junior Sportswoman for the year Siona Huxley are the only swimmers on scholarship at the moment. However, the 2011 junior sportsman for the year Jordan Augier and Julien Brice are in the thick of things competing to be awarded scholarship aid.

The Sharks swim club Swimmers currently away swimming at university in the USA – (1) Jon L Innocent Dolor, (2) Julien Brice, (3) Siona Huxley and (4) Jordan Augier.

Swimmers currently swimming for their school: (These swimmers will continue to swim to try to earn a scholarship to university with the exception of Runako Daniel. (1) Runako Daniel - High School (New Jersey), (2) Jason Beaubrun - High School (Florida) and (3) Joshua Adjodha - A Level (UK)

“ During the three years, we also had swimmers who have placed in the top 5 in common entrance, and that includes Jyasi Daniel, Bailey Spiegelberg and most notably Jonas Lanwehr who placed first overall this past year” Peterkin noted..

Most of these swimmers mentioned above have learned to manage their time very wisely as they are fully committed to a full week of swimming (12-15 hours per week) and school (35 - 40 hours per week).

There is an executive in place, The Sharks Swim Club President - John Bruce, Vice President - Diane Mauricette and Head Coach - Jamie Peterkin. In the coming weeks the club will be engaged in a number of fund raising activities for its members.
