Olympic Value Summer Camp

The St. Lucia Olympic Committee (SLOC) got its Olympic Values Youth Summer camps underway on Thursday 12th July 2012 with a training session for the Programme Facilitators at Olympic House, Barnard Hill, Castries.

A total of 17 individuals participated and were addressed by President of the (SLOC) Richard Peterkin. Another highlight of the day was having Olympians Zephrinus Joseph (Athletics) and Jamie Peterkin (Swimming) speak about their Olympic experience and how the youth can be supported.

“It was a positive and fruitful day. We will do our best to continue this momentum for the upcoming camp days, “camp co-ordinator Keyva Lashley said.

She added: “ Summer camp is a forum designed to introduce youth to the Olympic values. Our mission is to inspire the next generation to embrace the values to better themselves and positively impact their home, school and community. In addition, the camp will be an opportunity to raise awareness of Saint Lucia’s hosting of the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games.”

Olympic values are the central theme of the summer camp. Participants will be actively engaged to learn but also contribute their skills and experiences. The goal is to celebrate the values through a fun and interactive programme. Olympic values are taken from the fundamental principles in the Olympic charter. Joy of Effort, Fair Play, Respect for Others, Pursuit of Excellence, Living a Balanced and Healthy Lifestyle.

The camp will reach approximately 1000 youth age ranging 9-13 who will learn about the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, be a part of the Olympic Movement and to be living examples of the Olympic values. Approximately 24 programme mentors will be involved consisting of Youth and Sports coaches, youth camp co-ordinators and physical education teachers.

Camp locations will include Castries East, Vieux Fort, Gros Islet, Babonneau, Dennery, Mabouya Valley, Desruisseaux and Mon Repos respectively.
