NEW HIGH COMMISSIONER
Stan Bishop

Outgoing Chief Executive Officer of the West Indies Cricket Board, Dr. Ernest Hilaire, says he is quite ready to take up his new diplomatic post.

As of October 1, 2012, Dr.Hilaire will take up his duties as Saint Lucia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. The outspoken and often controversial outgoing WICB official told host Clinton Reynolds last Wednesday evening that his rich background in international relations serves as a crucial criterion to the new post.

The incoming High Commissioner added that he intends to carry out his diplomatic duties in a diligent manner that redounds to tangible benefits for Saint Lucia. Nevertheless, it will be a learning experience in itself, Dr.Hilaire admitted.

“The next thing for me to do is to serve my country as best as I can as the High Commissioner in London, to utilize all my skills and to learn new skills and to ensure that Saint Lucia benefits, certainly from my performance as High Commissioner,” Dr.Hilaire explained.

He did not, however, rule out the prospect of running for political office at the national level. There has certainly been much speculation about the rise of Dr.Hilaire among the ranks of the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) of which he is an influential member and prominent strategist.

“As of October 1st, I will be a public servant and I am serving in the interest of Saint Lucia as best I can,” Dr.Hilaire quipped. “Of course, there’s no secret about my whole political history and my political involvement. I have always said that at the appropriate time if there is a calling and circumstances are such that one has to respond to it, then that would be the calling.”

A former youth leader in the National Youth Council and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Dr.Hilaire holds a doctorate from the London School of Economics. He also holds degrees from the University of the West Indies (UWI) and Cambridge. Dr.Hilaire also served as chief executive officer of Cricket World Cup St. Lucia Inc when the West Indies hosted the International Cricket Council Cricket World Cup in March and April of 2007.

Dr.Hilaire replaces Mr. Eldridge Stephens, O.B.E. who served as Saint Lucia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from May 2008 to May 2012.
