P.M. Outlines Money Dealings to be Investigated
M.G. George

Attendees at Sunday’s Vieux Fort South constituency meeting of the Saint Lucia Labour Party got a glimpse of the alleged type of money transactions Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony plans to investigate against United Workers Party members of parliament.

The small gathering of party supporters in and outside the constituency who met at the Vieux Fort Primary School, listened carefully as the prime minister gave glimpses of why the Government of Saint Lucia has engaged the services of Bob Lindquist, a senior partner in an international forensic accounting firm.

He spoke of $450,000 being made available to a certain candidate in the south of the island to pass on to a brother of a UWP parliamentarian for projects to be implemented in the community adding that of concern to him was whether the money was actually spent in the community. He also wants to know what happened to the projects the money was supposed to have been spent on.

The prime minister gave yet another glimpse of the type of alleged transactions he claimed existed between the former Taiwanese Ambassador Tom Chou and the former UWP Administration and why he has hired Lindquist to investigate such transactions when he mentioned a request of $995,000 made by former Prime Minister Stephenson King to former Ambassador Chou for projects in Vieux Fort. That money, Dr. Anthony said, was targeted towards a UWP candidate at the time.

“I say this without shame, without fear that I can be taken to court for libel or defamation because it is factual. In time the full measure of that story will be told,” the prime minister said. He did mention the names of those he said were involved in the above mentioned transactions.

He said that the request from King was made in letter form and dated November 8th, 2011.

And to electrify the atmosphere even more the prime minister spoke of a large sum of money coming out of the Ministry of Education on the eve of the November 2011 general elections a certain candidate was given over $65,000 to purchase school books for students in the constituency the candidate was running in. That candidate was not a member of parliament yet that candidate received money from the Ministry of Education.

Prime Minister Anthony did promise that the audit to be untaken by Lindquist will go beyond the issue of Taiwanese funds and that the other areas that will be covered under the audit will be revealed at a later date.
