Kenny warns King
Micah G. George

Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony Sunday sent a warning to Stephenson King that may cause the latter to choose his words more carefully when talking about decisions taken by foreign governments that impact on Saint Lucians.

The prime minister was at the time addressing a gathering at the Vieux Fort Primary School in the Vieux Fort South Constituency and touched on the visa imposition placed on Saint Lucians by the Canadian Government.

The visa restriction was imposed last week and since then there has been a public outcry as to how past and present governments failed to see this coming and somehow work to avoid it.

The Canadian Government has made it clear that the decision to remove the visa exemption from Saint Lucian travelers was not one that was taken lightly.

According to the Canadian Government Saint Lucia does not meet Canada’s criteria for an exemption from the visa requirement due to the sustained flow of asylum claimants to Canada and a high rate of immigration violations.

Prime Minister Anthony promised to address the nation on the visa imposition within a few days.

King, as Leader of the Opposition, said that the prime minister should have known of the visa imposition before it was announced. The former prime minister for his part said that when he was prime minister the Canadian authorities did speak about the issue of Saint Lucians applying for asylum but they did not talk about visa impositions on the country.

Prime Minister Anthony Sunday inferred that he knows what the Canadian Government told King when he (King) was prime minister.

According to the prime minister every time a foreign government tells a sitting prime minister something, that foreign government tells the new government everything it told the former government.
