Busy Weekend For Cops
Stan Bishop

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force seems to have its hands filled these past few weeks.

A slew of incidents over the past weekend just added to the heavy workload the Force has inherited in recent weeks.

The past weekend of unfortunate happenings began on Friday, September 7 when officers attached to the Marigot Police Station responded to a 7:35 pm report made about a vehicular accident at La Croix Maingot.

According to police, twenty-six-year-old La Croix Maingot resident Jeff Rene was riding a Kawasaki 1000 motorcycle – registration number PJ 3046 – along the La Croix Maingot road when he lost control and ran off the road.

Rene sustained serious injuries as a result of the impact and was taken to the Victoria Hospital where he was treated and admitted in a critical condition. Around 8:20 pm the next day, Rene succumbed to his injuries. A post mortem is scheduled to take place shortly.

Meanwhile, residents of Forestiere say they are still in shock following the discovery of the lifeless body of a woman over the past weekend.

About 9 pm last Friday, police confirmed that the lifeless body of a middle-aged woman was discovered in a wooded area in the Forestiere community.

The dead woman has been identified as forty-three-year-old Tathenao Eugene. Upon hearing the news, scores of onlookers showed up close to the scene where the body was discovered on Friday evening.

Details surrounding Eugene’s death are still sketchy as police say they are still pursuing the matter. An official statement on the matter, The VOICE was told yesterday, will be released by police shortly.

Eugene’s death brings the total number of homicides for the year thus far to twenty-seven.

Two separate incidents on Saturday last left one man seriously injured and led to the arrest of another two.

In the first incident, which occurred around 3:50 am on Saturday, officers attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) responded to a report of an incident that occurred on Mary Ann Street in Castries.

Police say Gasper Williams aka Monty was stabbed multiple times about his body by a known assailant with whom he had an altercation. Williams was subsequently taken to the Victoria Hospital where he was treated and admitted in a critical condition.

Police say the matter is still under investigation.

Later that day, around 6:30 am, police officers attached to the Soufriere Police Station conducted an eradication exercise at Zenon in Soufriere. During that exercise, lawmen destroyed 1,500 grown marijuana plants and 200 seedlings.

Two men -- Elijah Severin of Industry, Choiseul and Christopher Edward of Goodlands, Castries – were arrested on the marijuana plantation.

Both men were subsequently charged with the following offences: (1) possession of a controlled drug, (2) possession with the intent to supply a controlled drug, and (3) cultivation of a controlled drug.

They appeared in court yesterday, Monday, to answer to the said charges.
