Let the games begin!
And the games began last Monday, ending decades of discussion on the merits and demerits of such games in Saint Lucia. Gambling, casino style is here, and poised to become a fixture on the local tourism landscape, and maybe, a marketing tool for the island in its choice tourism markets of North America and Great Britain.
Treasure Bay Casino, as it is called, opened Monday for business at the Baywalk Mall without the raising of an eyebrow by church leaders, perhaps an indication that they have resigned themselves to the inevitable.
Located in the heart of Rodney Bay, Treasure Bay is the first casino in Saint Lucia, 23 years after it was first mooted in Saint Lucia, an introduction which sparked a war of words between church leaders and the government over issues dealing with morality and the economic survival of the country.
Church leaders, over the years have been extremely vocal against the introduction of gaming facilities in Saint Lucia, but not gambling in its entirety because they were not advocating against the banning of games of chance that have perforated the Saint Lucian landscape over the years.
During the 2009 festive season a group calling itself The Fellowship of Gospel Preaching Churches, a combination of leaders from Pentecostal Churches across the island, responded when Prime Minister Stephenson King spoke of the casino at the mall. The group went as far as preparing an argument that took into consideration the several factors associated with a casino.

One year later, with the casino up and running and with The Fellowship of Gospel Preaching Churches silent on the matter, Treasure Bay Casino’s entry into Saint Lucia has been smooth and rippled free.
Modeled after the award winning Treasure Bay Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, the new casino combines an intimate, yet modern setting with a strong and stately interior featuring stacked stone with copper and blown glass accents throughout.
With over 250 state of the art slot machines, 22 table games including Roulette, Blackjack, Poker and Dice, Treasure Bay Casino at the Baywalk Mall is of an international standard not only in appearance but also in the way it will be managed.
Scott Cowan, the casino’s general manager at a press launch last week emphasized the lines on which the casino will be operated, noting that the policies that guide operations of that kind at the very highest level will be maintained.
With a staff complement of about 200, about 150 being Saint Lucians, the rest experts in the business pulled from countries around the world, the casino is expected to bring the tourism boost the many who have been for it have spoken of time and time again.
All gaming will be in American Dollars. The casino will be opened to everyone over the age of 18. Slots will be open at 10a.m daily and close at 2a.m (4a.m Friday and Saturday).
