Carmen
Rene Memorial ‘St. Lucia We Love’
Truly A Resounding Success
The
recently held Mr. & Miss Independence Pageant
by Grade Three students of the Carmen Rene Memorial
School held on Friday, March 1, 2013 on the
school grounds was truly a resounding success
which brought parents and students together
in a highly rated show displaying national unity
and student creativity.
Male
and female students provided welcome speeches,
danced, dramatized, sang, recited poetry, modelled
and participated in competitive formal wear
of the national colours utilizing the national
Independence theme “Unlocking Our Creativity
- Transforming Our World”.
Ms.
Juliana Prospere, Pageant Co-ordinator, who
conceived the idea with her students, choreographed
and raised funds for the activity was showered
with kudos by parents, students and show supporters
throughout the afternoon into evening activity
for her creativity in transforming a class project
into such a participative cultural activity
that involved students’ and parent’s
interaction from beginning to end.
It
provided a wonderfully new creative window for
teachers and students to take classroom learning
into another comfortable cultural space grounded
in national pride. Further, this cultural space
allowed students the freedom to explore tenets
of alternative cultural learning models.
The
invited judges, namely, Ms. Shanna Mondesir,
Ms. Jue Prospere and Ms. Diana Philip were blown
away by the varied displayed talents and unleashed
creativities of the participating students and
unanimously declared that all students of Grade
Three were indeed winners.
The
judges had to select Mr. Independence and Miss
Independence which was won by Neil Auguste who
represented the Caribs and Janalee Henry the
East Indians respectively. Both in their portrayals
brought both judges and the audience back to
pre-colonial St. Lucia in song and dance moves.
