That’s HER Job!

It’s Saturday and one of my friends is buying me a roti. People really like roti around here and they eat it with a whole set of weird stuff like curried mango, tamarind source and pumpkin. Personally, I think it has too much going on but I won’t say that to the 1.2 million Trinidadians who have made roti a way of life. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE is also a way of life in this country. In fact, there is NO customer service at all that may be called ‘bad.’ They are all angry as if it’s your fault that they are unhappy with their jobs. A bank teller got upset because I was counting my change which, as far as I know, she is supposed to count in front of me. Another time, a cashier at a local supermarket sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes because I handed her 10us. She seemed really upset about having to take 30 extra seconds to put it up against the light and pass the highlighter on it. But anyway, I’m rambling. Let’s get back to the roti shop.

I am about to eat my roti and I realize that I have no fork. This roti (a buss-up-shot) is supposed to be eaten with the hands but I’m not a fan of that method. So, I decide to go to the cashier and ask her for a fork. She points her finger over her shoulder and utters, ‘over so.’ I walk down along the counter and wait for someone to come out of the. No one comes out for few minutes. The cashier, who is now idle, walks over to the end of the counter where I am standing and picks up her BlackBerry. She stands RIGHT NEXT TO THE FORKS, looks up at me and continues to use her phone. Finally, a girl comes out of the kitchen. Before I can speak, the cashier utters ‘give he a fork deh!’ while she points to the forks which are RIGHT NEXT TO HER with her chin. The other girl reaches for the fork which is wrapped in tissue and hands it to me. Out of spite, I look directly at the lazy cashier and say ‘thank you so much for helping.’ I am baffled as she cracks a polite smile and replies as if she has done her job the fullest saying, ‘you’re welcome!’
