“Three words that best describe me are happy, intelligent and motivated,” says Desir. Here’s an inside scoop on the personality of St. Lucia’s reigning Carnival Queen, Ms Super J, Janelle Desir.

Janelle hails from the south western community of Soufriere. “I am from Fond St Jacques, Soufriere to be exact,” she says. This young lady, having grown up in this community has explained that though experiencing a pleasant upbringing, she has had to jump over a few of life’s hurdles. “Growing up in Soufriere has not always been a bed of roses. However it has definitely shaped me into the person I am today,” the Queen stated.

Her childhood memories are inclusive of time spent at the infant, primary and secondary schools within her community. “I started my schooling at the Fond St. Jacques Infant School then moved on to Soufriere Primary School and Soufriere Comprehensive,” she stated. Janelle indicated that she later attended the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, and is a graduate from the Business Administration course.

Despite having studied business, Janelle shares that her heart lies elsewhere. “I have a passion for the field of Mass Communication / Journalism and would like to pursue a career in Journalism,” she communicated. “I want St.Lucia to remember Janelle Desir as a well respected Journalist,” declared Desir.

Janelle is of the view that the responsibilities of a journalist are essential to a country’s development, social or otherwise, and also, as part of her contributions, wishes to serve through her career as a figure of encouragement to persons like herself who are pursuing their goals. “I believe that Journalism plays a major role in the development of St.Lucia and I would like to use my career to influence other young persons like myself positively,” she indicated.

Contending for this year’s Carnival Queen 2012 title is Janelle Desir’s first attempt in the area of pageantry. “This is my first pageant,” she clarified.

The reigning Carnival Queen has informed that the experience of this pageant is a memorable one and that this first attempt is not her last. “This experience has changed and shaped me into a more responsible, eloquent and confident young woman. I learnt how to manage my time properly and that’s something I will always remember as I reach for the stars,” commented Janelle.

She hopes that with her bubbly personality and according to most persons, her infectious smile, to further represent St. Lucia. “It is not my last, I plan on representing St.Lucia at Carnival next year and all other regional pageants that I’m asked to attend,” Janelle added.

The Carnival Queen expressed that she’s one to always think ahead. “I like to plan ahead and…I have a pretty good image of what my life will be in ten years,” she expressed. Though one to ‘be on top of her game’, Janelle has learned to leave room for the unexpected, as her participation in this pageant and emergence as Carnival Queen 2012 both form part of life’s unpredictable nature.

“I was proven wrong on the 7th of July, 2012. My life took a totally different turn and I’m just waiting to figure out what my next step is,” states the Carnival Queen.

Would anyone guess that Janelle is a pasta lover! “I love pasta!” shared Janelle, “It’s easy to prepare.” She also made sure to state, “However, I would not be a St. Lucian if I didn’t enjoy eating green figs and saltfish, and not forgetting cucumber salad.”

Janelle confesses that growing up in Soufriere has moulded her appreciation of life. “I think growing up in such a small community has taught me to learn and appreciate life more. I consider everyone around me as family,” she says.

This charming young lady shared that amidst all the beauty of the island, the St. Lucian people captivate her the most. “As we all know St.Lucia is the simply beautiful, Helen of the West. We can boast about so many attractions, our Pitons, volcano and beaches. However, what I love most about my country is the people. St. Lucians are warm and friendly. I work in the tourism industry and boy do we go the extra mile to ensure our guests are always happy,” the Carnival Queen stated.

Janelle sees it fit to extend her thanks to all those who contributed to her experience in the Carnival 2012 Queen Pageant. “I would like to thank all the persons who worked really hard to ensure my victory on Saturday night ( July 7th). My sponsor Super j IGA, my chaperone Patricia Calderon, my family and the entire Soufriere Community, to all my supporters I say thank you, I will make ST. LUCIA PROUD!” states Ms. Janelle Desir.
