Tell a friend:

21st November 2009
Whose is it?

First things first—break it off with Nelson.
Kaysie was sitting at the dining room table alone, making a to do list. It was simple enough, but she couldn’t seem to get past the second item: Tell Ricky. She couldn’t tell him. Not until she was sure it was his or that she even wanted to keep it. Besides, things had been so good lately since he got back from his trip. It’d been like three weeks of honeymoon bliss, although it was starting to wane.
Kaysie crossed off the two items on the list and started over. Visit doctor Rhenta, she wrote, then double underlined. She would take it one step at a time. Get that done today.
She made her way to the bathroom and got undressed. The phone rang just as she stepped into the shower. Kaysie paused, considering, then let it ring. The machine would get it.
“Hello?” Ari’s voice came on after the beep, just as she suspected. “Um, hi. Kay, if you’re there, please pick up.”
Kaysie closed the shower door and turned on the water. She just needed to think. She really didn’t need Ari’s know-it-all advice. Besides, she was sure Ari’d heard all she needed to from Maxine.
Boy, had she. Maxine had sped over to Ari’s immediately after picking Kaysie up off the bathroom floor, a sobbing quivering mass, and put her to bed. As soon as Kaysie quieted down she left.
She needed someone to talk to, and for once she was secretly relived that it was something other than the sordid details of her life that would be the topic of conversation. It was comforting to know she wasn’t the only one to make a mess of things. Not that she didn’t feel sorry for Kaysie, but Kaysie should have really been more careful, considering her situation and Ricky’s attitude.
Suffice it to say Ari was furious. Ricky was scum. She didn’t think he had one good bone in his body. On second thought, he didn’t have any bones, he was spineless.

“How could she have been so stupid!” Ari blurted. “Ricky? She wants to get trapped in a relationship with Ricky! So what does she plan to do, is she going to keep it? If I were her, I’d run to the nearest clinic and have it removed. “
Removal wasn’t an option for Kaysie, even if that was her first instinct. She needed to handle it the right way.
On the examination table in Dr Rhenta’s office, under a thin white sheet and naked from the waist down, Dr Rhenta was trying to get her to relax.
“When’d you find out?” she asked, squeezing cold blue gel out of a tube onto Kaysie’s stomach, getting her ready for an ultrasound.
“Yesterday.”
“Alright,” Dr Rhenta paused, “I can’t see anything which means you’re still pretty early. Judging from the start of your cycle, I’d say you’re about two weeks.”
Two weeks, Kayise made a mental note. She’d been with Nelson recently, but had it been as recent as two weeks?
“What’s wrong?” Dr Rhenta cut in. “Have you not told the father?”
Kaysie forced a smile. “I’m okay Doctor. I’ll call if anything.”
She left the office still calculating. The last time she’d been with Nelson was . . . just over two weeks, she thought. If she recalled correctly, Ricky’d been back for about three weeks now, and during that time she hadn’t seen Nelson.
Kaysie’s spirits soared. The baby was Ricky’s! Maybe that’s just what they needed—a family. Maybe, just maybe, a baby would make Ricky change for the better.
