LIME TV Turns 27!

February 22 was a big day for Saint Lucia, of course, being the island’s 34th Independence anniversary. But it was also a big day for LIME TV, as the island’s leading cable television service turned 27!

It was on Independence Day, 1986 that Cable & Wireless revolutionized television broadcasting in Saint Lucia with the launch of CableVision. Back then public access to full-scale cable television was minimal. The service quickly opened up the world to Saint Lucian viewers, allowing many to enjoy the liberating power that comes with easy access to popular and informative content, including up-to-date news and sports, world-class movies and sitcoms, and much more.

During that time the company absorbed the costs of maintenance, acquiring new programming and upgrading the system, but nevertheless continued extending coverage throughout the island. The price of CableVision service would remain unchanged for nearly 25 years, until 2009.

“As much as possible we wanted to make the service accessible to as wide a cross-section of the public as possible,” says Chris Williams. Now General Manager of LIME Saint Lucia, Chris has played an integral role in the development of LIME TV over the years. “We’ve always been conscious of our responsibility as Saint Lucia’s leading communications company, to serve the combined needs and expectations of the people of Saint Lucia by providing affordable access to our wide array of service offerings, including cable TV service,” he explains.

In 2009, LIME TV was upgraded from an analog service to a fully digitalized network, giving customers access to many more channels, new packages and exclusive programming.

“We introduced digital TV to Saint Lucia, vastly expanding the number of channels available and enhancing the quality of signal, picture and sound,” says Chris. “We also invested in the expansion of our network by bringing the service into several communities including Choiseul, in areas like Debreuil, La Pointe, MorneSion and Caffiere, laying down infrastructure and running lines to homes.”

LIME currently operates a state-of-the-art digital system, with hubs at Morne Fortune and Monier. Motorola and Scientific Atlanta are LIME’s main technology partners for the provision of cable television.

There is programming to suit every taste and lifestyle, including children’s, teenagers’ and young adults’ channels like Disney Playhouse, Disney XD, Boomerang, Cartoon Network and Gone Viral TV. There are educational and science channels such as Animal Planet, Discovery Home & Health, Discovery Travel & Living, Discovery Civilisation, as well as a range of local and Caribbean channels. In addition, LIME TV offers multiple sports channels, including ESPN and SportsMax which provide coverage of global sporting events and live matches and tournaments. Especially popular with viewers is the HBO/MAX Movie Pack, as well as channels like Oxygen, E!, Lifetime Movie Network and Lifetime Real Women, all of which offer a wide variety of movies.

“We offer the best deal and the most competitive rates on the market,” Chris asserts. “The Basic pack costs $77.73 a month and offers over 111 channels. The first set top box is free and installation and activation are also free for new customers. The HBO/MAX Movie Pack costs $34.50, but since December and until the end of February, we gave our customers those channels at no extra cost. In total, we offer customers over 150 channels.”

LIME TV has also worked with local, regional and international broadcasters to bring events like general elections, West Indies cricket, Saint Lucia Carnival and Saint Lucia Jazz to the world, in collaboration with local and international partners like ESPN, HBO and WSEE. It has also leveraged its partnerships with content providers like Cartoon Network and ESPN Caribbean to bring personalities as diverse as The Powerpuff Girls, former Trinidad & Tobago goalkeeper ShakaHislop, and former Jamaica striker Robbie Earle to Saint Lucia.
“Initiatives like these represent the creative approach LIME TV has taken with cable broadcasting, the approach we will continue to champion,” says Chris.

LIME TV has also provided free service to numerous institutions, including St Jude’s Hospital, the Holy Family Children’s Home, Comfort Bay Senior Citizens Home, the New Beginnings Transit Home and Boys Training Centre.

“On a broader scale, we have worked with Michael Walker, the Taiwanese embassy and the Ministry of Education to provide free cable TV to every primary school in Saint Lucia,” Chris continues with pride. “All in all it has been a tremendous outreach that has touched literally hundreds of thousands of lives in positive ways through the years. There is much to be proud of. When you watch events like Saint Lucia’s anniversary celebrations unfold on your television screen, you know LIME TV is making it all happen!”
