“Twel” and Victory …they go hand in hand!

By Kendel ‘Scady’ Eugene

IT’S not done once in a while or sporadically, it’s continuous and often seems deliberate- winning. Winning is a habit and Tribe of Twel continued the streak of dominance in the King and Queen of the Bands competition held on The Sab in Vigie last Thursday night.

With the Three Witches and Macbeth, a classic from William Shakespeare, Adrian Augier was able to fend off all who attempted to topple his throne. His towering portrayal was enough to ensure that victory for him and the Tribe of Twel was not just a “sweet dream” but a delicious reality.

His compatriot, Martin Dorville’s “Julias Ceaser: Mother in the Senate” placed second while Asari Tribe’s Cedric Laurent caught third with their portrayal “The Fisherman of Dauphin”. Royalites xTreme’s Thomas Cenac placed fourth with “Maasai Warrior”.

King and Queen of the Bands 2018

In the Queen of the Band’s category, it was “more of the same please” as Tribe of Twel again scored top points to lay claim to the top tier of Carnival. The portrayal “Lady Macbeth: Prisoner of Power” carried by last year’s Queen of the Band, Sharon Tanner ensured there would be no drama or confusion as to which queen is which. At the end of the night “the jealous woman” by virtue of the judges became Queen once again.

Nicky Tanisha Williams’ “Queen of the Forest Fairies” from Tribe of Twel placed second. Third place went to Asari Tribe’s Nicole St. Helen with the portrayal “Moonlight on the Marquee River” while Insommeil Carnival Band, arguably the most improved in this year’s competition was able to secure fourth place with their costume carried by Rosemarie Parris, “A Musical Journey”.

This year’s competition featured a total of seven Carnival bands (Royalites xTreme Carnival Band, Tribe of Twel, Asari Tribe, Insommeil Carnival Band, Pheonix Carnival, Meltdown XD and Looshan Revellers), half of the number that is expected to play mas on through the city circuit come Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th July.
