FORMER West Indies Cricket captain Daren Sammy officially launched his Foundation with a black tie gala at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort last week.
Guided by his favourite quote, āto whom much is given, much is expectedā, the Daren Sammy Foundation, a non-profit, charitable organization, has been a long time goal of Sammy.
Ever passionate about youth development through sports, and Sammy, being a shining example of how hard work and discipline pays off, spoke with great anticipation about how the Foundation will change the lives of many young Saint Lucians.
āIt took a lot to get to where I am today. It is a passion. If a few persons or organizations never paid attention to me, I could have fallen by the wayside. So I want to create that opportunity for our talented St Lucians.ā
At the launch attendees from major corporate sponsors, public sector agencies and specially invited guests were treated to performances by young, local artistes and a documentary that chronicled the life of Daren Sammy, from his humble beginnings to stardom in the world of professional cricket.
The Daren Sammy Foundation seeks to make a difference in the lives of under-privileged athletes through the donations of private and corporate citizens. It will support youth development through sports by providing educational and sporting supplies annually, the development of mentorship programmes for budding champions and by making a meaningful investment in other sporting disciplines across the island.
Recipients of the grant will be selected through strict criteria.
