IN my last weekend article, ‘Labour’s Painful Secrets,’ I suggested that the leader of the UWP having won three consecutive party conventions, 2013-2015, each more resounding than the one before it, should now mobilize his supporters and take to the streets to rid Saint Lucia of its speculative diplomatic representative and the failed government that appointed him to the IMO.
The article was written before the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), delivered her mega-nuclear bomb, on the head of the garrulous and luckless Minister of Housing, and his failed government of New Labour. It would be unfair to edify what the Minister said on a public political platform – where a spirit of madness is known to visit lost political causes. The DPP mega-bomb on the IMPACS report was a deadly blow and may prove a turning point in local politics.
After the event which triggered the DPP’s incisive release, the first thought which came to mind was what Compton would do with that information. Compton came before Odlum because Compton’s UWP must now react to what the DPP said. The appointment of the London based Saudi/Saint Lucian diplomat followed by the explosive DPP findings and release on IMPACS, would be certain to set Compton, the lion of Mahaut, to act. He would have spent many hours mobilizing his ‘foot soldiers’ and preparing them to demonstrate in order to bring down this failed and useless SLP government that only knows how to lie and deceive.
Compton would have held public demonstrations and marches for the recall of the island’s IMO ambassador. Having succeeded he would perhaps return to husband his Mahaut estate. The release from the DPP’s office, coming on top of the indiscretion of the IMO appointment would have been perceived by Compton, a lawyer and a political animal, as a gross attack on the integrity of the island. The lion of Mahaut would therefore spring into action. He would reach for support from the trades unions, the churches and the private sector.
His UWP would surely be joined by persons who had never before supported it. Such persons would march against the evil that had necessitated the IMPACS report and the political expediency and deceit that has passed for governance these past four years. A student of politics would certainly be aware that something is ‘rotten in the state of Denmark.’ The entire IMPACS process and the manner of its reporting to the public in March this year, by the dissembler in chief, left more questions than it answered.
Did the words of persons who believed that they were wronged by the police carry more weight than that accorded those of the Royal St Lucia Police? Did the Prime Minister present the IMPACS report to the public in such a way that implicated the police? Did his words make it appear that the DPP would be passed ‘the evidence’ to proceed, or did I completely misunderstand him? Why was the former Commissioner asked to leave? One must pray that Mr. Francois did not compromise his ability to later sue for wrongful dismissal in any agreement.
If the Police Commissioner was found wanting in his duties was there a hearing (as natural justice would demand), to answer charges against him? If there was, did the public know about it? Crucially, was the commissioner sacrificed on evidence of criminals and their families and if so, why not take the whole filthy injustice to its logical conclusion; fire the entire police and appoint inmates at Bordelais prison, with uniforms and weapons, ‘to serve and protect’ the citizenry. Did a certain politician in opposition go squealing to the U.S embassy in Barbados against the police and now has to show (by means of IMPACS), to please his bosses? Some criminals behave like certain politicians we know; lying even when caught red-handed.
What would Compton do? He would realize that the plight of the people demands that these SLP misfits in government be brought to their pathetic knees in disgrace. SLP Inc. has brought too much pain and misery upon the people of this fair land. It is time to reject politicians who hide like sycophants behind pen names that spell S. L. P. What shame! How do lost leaders find time to think about the problems of the country and their solutions? Is plotting mischief and creating false stories about Allen Chastanet all there is to the politics of New Labour?
What would Compton do in this situation? He would insist that the people not allow their pride and dignity to be abused and trampled upon by this lost and useless SLP government.
There is a saying ‘time longer than twine’- Compton may be absent but one like him will rise and set fire on the backs of failed Labour for the way they have abused their authority and made the poor poorer. They have killed the middle class on whom so many of the poor depended.
The next step for the UWP may be to hire a competent lawyer to examine the DPP’s findings of lack of evidence in IMPACS. In the meantime the government must be made to issue a public apology to the entire police force and to the former commissioner in particular. The long suffering people of Saint Lucia must be prepared to put everything aside and force this failed government to call elections now. The DPP’s statement of IMPACS versus the manner in which the Prime Minister presented it to the nation plus the recently exposed playboy ambassador on IMO cry out for strong action on the part of the entire population.
If you love your country and you are a proud and dignified Lucian then, get ready to demonstrate and help rid yourselves of this lying, reckless and corrupt government. It’s time to take a stand and to do what Compton (and Odlum and Josie too) would have done in the same situation forty years or so ago. Summon up the blood, tighten the sinews, imitate the action of the lion of Mahaut. Compton would be out fighting for justice and better government – so should we.
