Soca Season Takes Flight

THE first major soca show since the official launch of this year’s carnival season took place on Wednesday evening on the grounds of the National Cultural Centre.

The open-air concert featured seasoned and emerging soca talents, many of whom are already stating their intentions openly about picking up Party Soca, Groovy Soca and Road March titles this year.

Nineteen artistes performed on Wednesday: Sweet Kay, Nickler, Soca Psycho, Menell, Platinum George, CJ, Mantius, Alpha, Imran Nerdy, D’Sean, Mysterio, Mongstar, Arthur Allain, HP, Q-Pid, Ricky T, Superman HD, Sedale and Ezra.

Thus far in the season, soca music seems to be getting better reviews than its counterpart, calypso. After four calypso tent shows, calypso music is finally beginning to entice the fans, especially die-hard “tent pinez” who continue to clamour for better quality of music and productions.

The future of soca music also looks promising as artistes continue to increase their game and professionalism. The return of multiple soca title-winner, Alpha, and the introduction of new sensation, CJ (of “SweffJook” fame), might just be the icing on this soca season’s cake.

A number of other soca shows are slated throughout the next few weeks of the carnival season. Be sure to take in some of the music, the atmosphere, and especially the budding talent in the genre.
