A TRULY momentous event! Indeed, Saturday, April 4, was a date of outstanding significance to Spartan Health Sciences University School of Medicine, more so for the twenty-one students of diverse nationalities who recently completed their basic sciences studies in St. Lucia.

In the splendiferous ambience of the award-winning Bay Gardens Beach Resort, in Rodney Bay, Gros Islet, the emotionally aroused students were graced with the presence of faculty, staff, special guests and family members who came to congratulate, commend and essentially celebrate the special occasion.

Esteemed guest, Dr. Martin Didier, Head of Medicine at Victoria Hospital, was afforded the opportunity to impart relevant words of knowledge and sagacity to the students and other attendees. In a very eloquent style, he underscored the importance of having an unquenchable desire to be well-informed and to continuously keep abreast with latest developments in one’s field. He highlighted the importance of recognizing that numerous difficulties will be present on the road ahead, but they should not be daunted by such obstacles. Instead they should brace themselves to face those hardships by being strong and courageous.

Another sterling contribution was delivered by Dr. Christopher Beaubrun, Family Medical Physician and Clinical Lecturer at Spartan Health Sciences University. In his capacity as keynote speaker, he emphasized how necessary it is to persevere even when faced with adverse conditions. He conveyed to the students ten tips for achieving success as they embark on another chapter in their quest to become doctors. These included empathizing with others and voluntarily imparting knowledge.

According to Dr. Beaubrun, teaching others serves as a great way to reinforce what one already knows. It was evident that Dr. Beaubrun’s address struck a chord, especially with the graduating students

The inspiring speeches were punctuated by magnificent pieces of entertainment. JayashriNataraj, a well-known violinist, captivated the audience with a melodious rendition. Additionally, Glenda Caballero, a Spartan student, thrilled everyone with her splendid vocal talent. A fantastic performance by the En Vogue dance troupe, with choreography directed byMr. KendellFontenelle, a member of the spring 2015 fifth trimester class, was very well received. This dance served as a tribute to the diligence exerted by himself and his fellow classmates.

The farewell ceremony culminated with the expression of bitter-sweet emotions. It can definitely be a tearful moment when students have to bid farewell to persons who have impacted so positively on their lives. Conversely, students would be eager and happy to embark on a new journey, aiming to fulfil their aspirations of becoming competent physicians.
