UNESCO Gets Funds For Heritage Project

THE Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO has acquired funding to the amount of US$20,000 for a documentary and sensitization campaign that will educate the public about the importance of preserving Saint Lucia’s heritage and artifacts.

The project titled “The Heritage Property &Artifact Protection Documentary and Awareness Campaign” is the brainchild of local filmmaker and TV producer Mr. Darnel Kendal John. It is aimed at “the production of a documentary and public awareness campaign that will educate the public on the importance of preserving Saint Lucia’s unique cultural heritage.

Funding for the project has been secured under the UNESCO Participation Programme 2014-2015 biennium. The funding is in-keeping with UNESCO’s efforts to “protect, conserve and promote heritage and history for dialogue and development; and to underscore the central role of heritage in promoting sustainable development, reconciliation and dialogue within and among countries and people.”

An official presentation ceremony was held last Friday, at the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development and Labour.

At the ceremony, the National Commission expressed pleasure at being able to contribute to a project that is designed to draw attention to Saint Lucia’s natural and cultural legacy.
