A humble beginning to the community driven 2014 South Coast Basketball League Playoffs tipped-off Tuesday night in Laborie with competition fever to rival any NBA contest. It was must see TV on the court with BBC getting all they could handle from a short-handed but unrelenting Hustlerz crew.

A low scoring affair as a result of tight defence, the first half ended 27-23 with Hustlerz in close contention behind Chris Francois and captain Jay Deroses contributions of 8 and 6 points respectively. BBC, down 13-15 at the end of the first quarter sparked a run in the second from their trapping defense to outscore the Hustlerz and take the lead by half time.

The second half was tighter still, with only 15 points total scored in the third. Again the rugged Hustlerz crew fought to stay in it and behind skipper Deroses were able to tie the scores at 33 by the end of the period.

The fourth quarter began with a 4 point play by Hustlerz’ Weston Modeste, the paunchy guard getting fouled on a made trey to the delight of the Laborie spectators. BBC responded with a 3-point play by captain Kurt Raphael, who converted the free throw, unlikeModeste to keep scores tied.

The teams traded baskets until BBC’s Craig Fontellio scored a trey from the left wing to put his club up 41-40. Later, another trey by Fontellio kept BBC up 46-42. Hustlerz responded again with Canaan St. Catherine scoring on a fast break layup and later off the nifty find by Deroses. But with less than three minutes remaining, and after a field goal by BBC’s Clay Williams, Hustlerz skipper Jay Deroses fouled out, his club down 48-46.

The loss of their point guard was the end of the Hustlerz who found it difficult to complete a play under the pressure of the closing moments of the game. BBC’s Clay Williams got fouled with 43 seconds remaining and Hustlerz in penalty fouled situation. He converted on one of two free throws to put BBC up for good 49-46.

It was a collective effort by BBC, their captain cold on the night scoring only 7 points. The Hustlerz, though shorthanded with a few of their key players on work duty, competed regardless and gave a good account of themselves.
